Bimuno – Prebiotic Review & Giveaway

I was recently asked if I would like to try Bimuno IMMUNAID – a prebiotic designed to keep the immune system fit and healthy and as I spent this time last year battling flu… twice! I was keen to do everything that I can to ensure I have a healthy festive season.

Bimuno IMMUNAID come in a pastille form – they are soft and chewy and easy to digest. I was expecting an orange flavour  but they are almost flavourless aside from a strange taste I can’t describe and which is why it is much better if you take them after breakfast as advised. Upon receipt I just gave them a try in the afternoon and it certainly wasn’t like my experience with other multi-vitamins – but like I said definitely take after food and you won’t know the difference!

Bimuno IMMUNAID helps encourage and sustain a healthy level of the guts ‘good’ immune supporting bacteria and by increasing and strengthening the good bacteria you support your body’s natural defences. It was also interesting to read how the pastilles are not digested by the stomach or gut but instead reach the colon where maximum results can be achieved. Additionally Bimuno IMMUNAID includes 15% RDA of Vitamin C (per 2 pastilles).

At this time of year the body is under a lot of stress – trying to get sorted for Christmas, frantically busy trying to get as much work out of the way before downing tools, you are stressing about what to buy who, the kids seem to have a constant cough and cold (the youngest has), we over indulge and don’t always continue the healthy activities we undertake year round so it is worth giving the body a little helping hand not only during this time but all the year through. I have since last years flu episode taken a multi-vitamin throughout the year whilst also trying to ensure I consume as much nutrients and vitamins through healthy food and I am happy to say that so far so good! It’s worth watching the video for more information on the benefits of taking a prebiotic at this time of year.

The pastilles arrived in good time – at a time I was suffering from severe stomach pains most likely due to something that I ate so I made a start on them. Within a few days my stomach was feeling much better and a lot less bloated and I was back to normal. Additionally the kids have started coming home from school and nursery with coughs and colds and as yet (touch wood) I am not showing any signs of catching these bugs. Additionally the pastilles are suitable for children 6+. My eldest daughter likes to take a multi-vitamin so I might see what she thinks of these.

It is worth noting that supplements are best taken in order to prevent problems and that by taking Vitamin C during times of colds, flu etc… have little benefit so try prevention as opposed to the cure.

I have a decent supply of these so I will continue to take and report back my findings as I have only been taking for just over a week. As indicated on the packaging the benefits build up over time and a daily intake is recommended. If I make it through to February without a cold I will be most impressed!

Bimuno also offer additional products aimed at supporting IBS (IBAID) and potential bugs you might associate with travel (TRAVELAID). As I have family members that suffer from IBS I will certainly be recommending that they give Bimuno products a try!

You can purchase Bimuno products from Boots or directly from Bimumo. The RRP for the Bimuno IMMUNAID pastilles is £9.99 but they feature in Boot’s 3 for 2.

The good people over at Bimuno have also provided me with the opportunity to give THREE of my followers the chance to win a 1 month’s supply of Bimuno IMMUNAID!

Hi-Tec Luca Running Shoe Review + #Giveaway!

Hi-Tec Luca

The Luca’s are described as a minimalist running shoes featuring a reduced seam upper with welded support overlays for ultimate comfort. A ultra lightweight IMEVA midsole with rubber pod inserts deliver a low profile racing shoe feel for the recreational athlete.

Initial Impression

I was expecting the Luca’s in a different colour way (see below) and of course gutted that the trainers sent weren’t in the colour way shown on the Hi-Tec website. I am not a fan of baby pinks – hell I barely wear any colour but black, aside from when I’m in the gym where I will experiment with neons and brighter colours. I’m sure you’ll agree that this colour way is just funkier and I would even be quite happy wearing these casually.

Hi-Tec Luca Neon

The shoe felt very light in my hand, in fact they weigh only 210g, and the overall quality was quite impressive, especially as Hi-Tec is regarded by some as a low end brand. The only think I noticed was a Hi-Tec badge on one of the trainers had been put on slightly skewed but you would only notice this if you really got up close.

I did however think the black cheapened the look of the shoe as the front panel was a synthetic material which gave a plastic appearance. Having looked at the Luca’s available on the Hi-Tec website there are some really funky colour ways so I wouldn’t discount this shoe entirely.

The Fit

I personally feel that the sizing comes up a little big both length and the width, I am a 6 (and had a 6 sent) but I did feel like my feet could move around in them. When I’m undertaking physical activity I want a trainer that fits me snug and not one I have to worry about slipping or my feet slipping out of (especially if I’m doing spinning!). They would be great for undertaking class activities such as LBT as they are so light and when you are coming to the end of the class and feel like you can barely lift your feet off the ground these would be great – there are times in the past where I have taken my trainers off as my feet feel so heavy!

I’m aware that these trainers are specifically labelled as a running shoe, but even with running on the treadmill I just didn’t feel comfortable. Unfortunately I didn’t wear to my usual LBT class due to them feeling big – doing squats and your feet slipping is not great!

Had the fit been perfect then I may feel completely differently about this trainer. Especially as there are some great reviews of the Luca’s on the Hi-Tec website so if you are after a reasonably priced trainer / running shoe then the Luca’s are definitely worth considering – just take into account my thoughts on sizing!

Hi-Tec Wearing

So… as I don’t plan to wear these trainers again they are up for grabs!!

As I mentioned they are a size 6, but I do feel they would fit a 6.5 / 7 at a push!

p.s. My BRITA Marella Jug Give Away is still running until the 26th August, if you fancy being in with a chance of that too?

Cooking… tastes Better with BRITA

I was recently sent a BRITA Marella Filter Jug in order to get involved in BRITA’s ‘Better with BRITA’ Campaign which aims to promote using filtered water when cooking as opposed to just drinking.

Taste Tests on a leading panel of experts found that various vegetables all tasted better when cooked with BRITA and that salads appeared fresher and more vibrant when cleaned with BRITA water, because of this Lisa Faulkner is launching the ‘Better with BRITA’ campaign highlighting how she uses BRITA filtered water as an ingredient in cooking for the best tasting food and drink. For details of BRITA products go to www.brita.co.uk.

We are lucky that up in Yorkshire we have pretty decent tap water, but that isn’t the case in many parts of the country, however even with our lovely Yorkshire Water, BRITA further improves the taste and it’s great to have ice cold water to hand… believe me with this jug you will drink more water!

Now I already own a BRITA Marella Filter Jug, which I love and which has lead me to drink far more water than I used to do, so I am going to give one of you lucky readers the chance to win the one I was gifted… more on that later!

Moving on…

As part of the campaign Lisa has created a number of food and drink recipes, all of which look amazing, but first of all I tried the Potato & Kale Curry.

Sometimes, I just don’t fancy meat so it was great to see a veggie option which I could try and which I had all the ingredients for. I did however replace the New Potatoes with Sweet Potato or alternatively you could use Butternut Squash.

The recipe card gave quantities for serving 4 but I just made for the two of us.

BRITA - Ingredients

Ingredients – Serves 2

  • 1 Sweet Potato (150g)
  • 1 Bag (206g) Sliced Curly Kale (This was much less than half the amount recommended on the recipe car but I still felt this was too much so I would recommend you reduce)
  • 1 Small Red Onion
  • 1 tsp Chopped Ginger
  • 2 Garlic Cloves Chopped
  • 1 Red Chilli Chopped
  • 1/2 Bunch coriander chopped – leave a few sprigs for decoration
  • 1 Tin Coconut Milk (This is recommended for serving 4 but I felt we needed a full tin for the two of us, probably because there was so much Kale)
  • Juice of Half a Lime
  • 1/2 tsp Coconut Oil for frying (or any other oil)

BRITA - Cooking Process

Cooking process

  • Cook the sweet potatoes, at the same time bring a separate pan of water to the boil ready for the Kale.
  • In a separate pan heat the oil, add the chillies, onions, garlic and ginger and cook for 3-4 minutes stirring continuously.
  • Add the Kale to the boiling water, once it returns to the boil remove from the pan.
  • Add the cooked potatoes and kale to the rest of the mix and cook for a further 5 minutes
  • Add the coconut milk and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add the chopped coriander and lime juice.
  • Season and serve.

This can be served as a main or even a side dish although these quantities give a very good sized serving which will leave you full for only 304 calories!

It was pretty hot, however that could have been down to our chillies, so if you don’t like your dishes too spicy I would suggest halving the quantities.

Overall a great dish… perfect for when you have veggies to use up!

BRITA - FINALBRITA - Potato & Kale Curry

There are a variety of recipes supplied by Lisa, next one on my list is the Smokey Broccoli Salad!
