Happy Gym-iversary To Me! And a little competition for the people of Huddersfield

So the 6th July marks one whole year since I made the decision to join a gym… one whole year!

It also marks a major achievement as I have never managed to stay at a gym more than 4-6 months. I lose motivation and interest and more importantly I didn’t see any results!

When I first signed up to the gym, in my case Pure Fitness at Lindley, the aim was to lose a bit of weight and that was happening but then finishing off my CAM Diploma in Marketing Communications, a heap of travelling for work (Cape Town & Bangkok where the food is amazing in both places) , then it was Christmas which was then topped off with two rounds of flu all took its toll and I put the weight back on plus a little more – devastating!

So in January this year I gave myself the personal challenge of not only losing weight, but to completely overhaul my health and fitness and that is how this blog was born.

And to celebrate all this, we (myself and Pure Fitness) are giving away a 7 week membership to one lucky winner (details of which can be found at the end of this post)! Another giveaway will be coming up in August which is open to everyone so keep your eyes peeled!

So what have I been doing?

Since getting back to the gym properly in January I had a workout plan put together by Oliver. This is one of the things I love about this gym, no signing you up, there’s the equipment and this is how you use it! They ask what you want to achieve and put a plan together suggesting what you should do to achieve it and promote you going back to them after 6 weeks to review it!

So I was given time on the cross trainer – high / hill setting, rowing machine, arm pulls, core bag, exercise ball core, medicine ball twists, heel taps and a few other core exercises. Thankfully he didn’t add any treadmill in but where I had time I did use it on a high incline and added in weights to increase the fat burning intensity.

This programme was doing well and I was starting to see results but as I visit the gym on my own (too many failed gym buddies in the past) I decided to start taking part in class activities in order to really push for results.

This is what I have done so far…

LBT

I love this class and take part twice a week. It’s a great fat burning workout that tones the key areas most ladies want to fix up. I have seen some major improvements from regularly taking part in this class, my legs and butt (I would say) are pretty tight and the tum is certainly on the way to being so. I now have more definition around my waist in that I am not as straight anymore and would say I have those hour glass curves. I generally burn between 250 – 350 calories per class depending on what area we start with and what props we use which can vary from medicine balls, exercise balls to even barbells!

Oliver who takes the class and who is also one of the permanent PF Gym staff members really makes sure you make the most of this class. He is friendly, approachable and will push you to work harder suggesting using heavier equipment if he thinks you can do it. There is also a really friendly vibe in the class, everyone speaks to one another and encourages each other and are all welcoming of new members. I actually feel deflated if I miss this class as it really is a good workout and positive mental pick me up!

Power Hoop

This is relatively new on the timetable at PF Gym, but has received a great reception. After only one week it went up to 2 classes per week!

I have reviewed Power Hoop previously in my blog but for those who haven’t read it yet. Power Hoop is a workout using a weighted hoop (in this class it weighs 4lbs) and promises a defined and tightened core. Not only that but you also use the hoop to perform other exercises which provides an all over body workout. I can burn up to 400 calories in this class and it is quite good for fat burning too but unbelievably increases your fitness levels too as you do have to move around whilst hooping!

Jen who takes the class is an external instructor who also works within the NHS. She is lively, enthusiastic and absolutely loves what she does having hooped herself for 6+ years before becoming a Power Hoop Instructor. Believe me, if you want proof of what Power Hoop can do for your core she is it!

Hour of Power

Hour of Power classes are quite an intense workout. It’s really covered in the title! You spend an hour undertaking a quite intense activity with the use of dumbbells. Earlier in the year I had the opportunity to take part in a class with Hour of Power guru Rajko (his father founded HOP). You do not stop in this class whatsoever, constantly jumping up and down performing dumbbell moves. A great all over body workout and calories buster which is great for improving fitness levels. In the HOP Masterclass with Rajko I burnt over 700 calories!

I started to do the Hour Of Power classes earlier in the year but due to my daughter’s swimming class changing times it was a class I had to unfortunately drop. Even getting there for the Sunday class is a bit of an issue when you have two young children to consider. So once Stevie’s has moved up a grade then hopefully I will be back to it.

In April Pure Fitness Gym achieved Hour of Power Class of the Month – take a look here to find out a little more!

Niall who takes the class is a relatively new HOP instructor but has been practicing for over 5 years! Hoping to get back to it soon!

PF-Classes

Other Classes

I have also undertaken Yoga and Spinning on a couple of occasions, but it is all dependent upon the time I have available and what I want to achieve that week. Yoga is great for fat burning and is rather relaxing. Spinning on the other hand just kills me, great for calorie burning but my fitness levels are appalling! To see the full class timetable click here.

So what have I achieved?

Since the end of January and in conjunction with eating better I have lost over 8kg and reduced my body fat by 2% (more if you go off the measurements in the gym) and in the last month have lost quite a few CMs off my lower body (I didn’t really chart measurements in the early stage, relying solely on weight, but have learnt that there are many factors in determining how successful your weight and fitness goals are measured). So once weight loss hit a plateau I changed to measuring and it has really shown some incredible results.

Moving Forward

I plan to continue with the LBT classes (and the others I have mentioned but LBT is my key class) along with weight training which I have just recently started to help achieve the results I want. I hope to lose another 6lbs but I am now more focused on having a more toned, lean body and as muscle weighs more than fat if it means I don’t drop those extra pounds but look better, then I can live with that.

I have a deadline of 18th August (my 30th birthday) to get everything in order, everything is looking much better and I have to remember that it took me 10ish years to more or less destroy my body by not eating right, being lazy and having babies that getting it to almost perfection is not gonna happen in a matter of weeks.

After then it’s a case of maintaining! That is gonna be interesting but I will continue to plot my journey.

Fitness Fail?

Well last week I have to say I pretty much failed in the fitness department. Due to the husband being away and the youngest playing up at bedtime I have had barely no time to go to the gym or even do a home workout which I tend to do if he is away – but not this week!

Last Monday he left for Kentucky and that is where my week went downhill, usually it’s not an issue and I cope very well on my own whilst working and looking after two kids whilst fitting in a Fitness Blender workout in an evening, but not this week. After the youngest having croup and generally going through the start of the terrible 2 stage she just does not want to go to bed. Monday night resulted in her falling asleep at 10.30pm which left me thinking I’ll have a handful of those peanut M&M’s that are in the cupboard – I ate the full share bag (approx. 912 calories) to myself! Tuesday wasn’t much different, bedtime was earlier but than I had 5, yes FIVE, chocolate digestives (430 calories).

The most frustrating part of these two days? I actually had a really good overall diet with plenty of protein, vegetables and healthy fats but the lack of sleep and wind down time just worked against my willpower.

Wednesday is where change came about and I vowed to go to the gym for an hour before picking the girls up from school and nursery. I’m so glad I did as it made me feel so much better and in control. Before I hit the gym I also made some homemade Banana & Peanut Butter protein ice cream so I had that as my go to sweet if I feel off the wagon. Overall a good day – I only had one chocolate digestive and the toddler went to sleep around 9pm!

Thursday I met a friend for lunch and had the most amazing Afternoon Tea but that included cakes, scones and a whole matter of naught treats.

Friday again met a friend for lunch, the choice of mushroom soup wasn’t too bad but the courgette and lime cake was – even though it was delicious – not quite as delicious as my own though! I did however make it to my LBT class that night and managed to squeeze a little bit of time on the cross trainer beforehand so at least some exercise.

The weekend was a non event, although generally I ate pretty well although I had 3 glasses of wine on Saturday evening. I did however managed to resist when family members where trying to offer biscuits so go me!

I did however wear my Proskins all week to bed, so at least I was getting a hidden workout and they went some way to proving my stats which show I lost 0.6kg (1.3lbs) over the last week and my measurements have reduced. However when I have a week like the above I worry that I am in fact losing muscle and not fat, which is not what I want to do.

So this week I’m back in the game….

  • LBT Class tonight and then I am gonna do some lifting – regardless of whether the Ibiza Bod Boys are in the room (I can probably lift heavier anyway)!
  • Yoga and Power Hoop on Wednesday
  • Walking and LBT Class on Friday, plus some lifting if I can fit it in!
  • In and amongst all that I am going to try and use some of the workout gear I got from my Fab Fitness Haul last week whilst at home!
  • Wear Proskins all week taking Week 3 Measurements on Friday
  • AND to top it all off improve the diet further!! Online food shop is to be delivered today with meals planned out for the week!

Let’s think positive…

Countdown to 30

Fab Fitness Haul

What started as the need to find a new gym bag that fits EVERYTHING in has turned into a bit of a shopping spree!  So I thought I would share with you some great bargains I have managed to pick up this week in my quest for an on going healthy and active lifestyle!

Fitness Haul

To start off, the gym bag I bought from American Apparel at ASOS (£20.50)- I have been eyeing this one up for a while but wasn’t quite sure just how big it was but it’s massive! I have had rucksacks and so on in the past but find that you struggle to fit a change of clothes, towel and toiletries into easily. Therefore I wanted something quite large but lightweight that I could just chuck everything into. I’m useless when it comes to compartments so it may as well all be in the same one.

Another item I have been on the look out for are some resistance bands so I thought I would pop into TK Maxx to see what they had to offer. Main reason being when I travel I tend to take mainly carry on luggage which means I am unable to take my gym kit with me, so I wanted something that I could easily pop in my case and do a hotel room workout. Introducing ’empower’ Total Body Toning System £7.99 (RRP $29.99). It includes an upper body power cord, a lower body power cord with padded ankle cuffs and a door strap along with a workout guide and the whole package takes up less room than a pair of trainers! This is a beginner / Intermediate kit which offers resistance up to 15lbs (6kg).

Total Body Toning

After picking up the above I was just about to walk away from the fitness section in TK Maxx when I saw the ’empower’ Cardio Core Fitness Hoop lurking at the back of the shelf and for £12.99 (retail $29.99) I had to grab it! I love the Power Hoop class that I do at the gym but with both myself and the husband having jobs that involve travelling and childcare to consider getting to a class isn’t always possible and with my 30th birthday only a couple of months away I need to do as much work on my core as possible. Although not as heavy as the Power Hoop, it will do for adhoc fitness at home. Perhaps if I was going long haul on business I could break this back down again and take with me if I didn’t have access to a gym as it doesn’t take up too much room.

Moving on to clothing. I am always on the lookout for a decent top for the gym, one that’s not too tight, but not too baggy but I just can’t seem to find one that is quite right. This top from MPG Sport was just £12.99 from TK Maxx and looked to be just what I was after. I thought I had bought a Small but upon getting home it turns out it’s XS. It fits ok so I’m not going to bother taking it back but hopefully in a few more weeks it will fit even better! MPG are currently offering 25% off your order if you like their page on Facebook!

MPG Top

After spotting the lovely Nic from Nics Nutrition picking up a pretty decent fitness kit haul at Primark, I decided to check it out. Unfortunately Primark in Huddersfield didn’t have a decent range, but if you are after some introductory kit then it is worth checking out. On offer includes sports bras, pants, tops and I saw one Jacket that Nic managed to pick up but unfortunately not in my size. I opted for a sports bra (£4) in a size 10 and although it fits rather nicely I don’t think I would wear it for running, instead opting to low intensity class work. However, for £4 it’s worth having when my others are in the wash. I also picked up a pack of 7 neon sports socks for just £2.50. Again handy for having to hand (or foot)! The picture only shows 5 pairs but you got 2 pairs of pink and grey.

Primark

As you can see I’m loving the neon colours at the moment. Apparently it’s in? I’m usually a black and grey type of girl but when it comes to working out I need bright colours to motivate me so regardless as to whether it’s the latest trend it’s getting worn!

So with all that shopping I decided I should get myself a couple of treats. The first of which was this Rodial GLAM BALM Hand for just £11 in TK Maxx (RRP £39!) I suffer with shockingly dry hands made worse by over washing and I find they are always pretty dry after I’ve been to the gym too. So I’m really hoping that this does the trick! It sinks in nicely and smells divine! I did however get home and check this out online to find that Rodial are offering it on their website for just £9.50 with free delivery, so if you want some get some now!

Rodial

Finally I treated myself to some Panda Natural Raspberry Liquorice , Health & Herbs Peppermint Tea and some WheyHey Protein Ice Cream (to be blogged about later) from Holland & Barrett. I’ve heard liquorice has health benefits and is fairly low in calories so instead of reaching for the chocolate I shall be reaching for this… in moderation of course! Peppermint Tea however is my love!

Hopefully this makes up for the Afternoon Tea I had with a friend yesterday at Neaversons where I ate (half of) and drank this! Welcome to my life Parma Violet Fizz!

See, every wannabe fitty deserves a treat every once in a while!

Neaversons

I’ve got the POWER…

Power Hoop that is!

My gym, Pure Fitness, recently added this class to their packed class timetable and I am so glad they did!

Power Hoop is an aerobic hula hoop class using a weighted / wider hoop compared to normal hula hoops. The hoop also has a wavy interior which although hurts when you first start hooping is apparently over time meant to improve your core muscle.

The class lasts for approximately an hour in which you do various exercises that focus on various parts of your body using the hoop. So although the main focus is hooping to improve your core muscles and profile you also undertake exerciseS that involve lifting the hoop, squatting along with various others in order to get an all over body workout.

At first I was a little conscious, I mean I can’t even hula my kids hula hoop for more than 5 seconds, how on Earth was I gonna cope with a weighted one? But I have to say I think I pretty much rocked it! I loved every minute of hooping even though there was an element of pain whilst using the hoop. But as they say no pain no gain!!

For more information about Power Hoop and to see a class in action you can view on You Tube.

Using my Polar FT7 I calculated that I burnt 433 calories doing 52 minutes of Power Hoop, which surprised me a lot! Also half the class was spent fat burning and half cardio which is just the type of class I want at the moment! (Remember this figure depends on your personal weight, height and current weight and of course heart rate calculations, so this will be different for everyone, but gives you a good idea as to what you can look to burn)

Not content with Power Hooping I decided that I would also take a spinning class straight after! I have never done spinning before or even sat on a bike in almost a year of being a member at the gym, but as my fitness levels have improved I am keen to try out new things.

This has to be one of the hardest classes I have ever done! I don’t think I have ever put my legs under so much stress before, but overall I think I did a pretty good job at keeping up. I wasn’t as fast as the regulars but I think it is something that I would do again in the future even if I did come off the bike looking like a beetroot! But another 482 calories burnt in 40 minutes so I’m not gonna complain!

So, the morning after…

Well I was expecting a ton of bruising around my waist as it does hurt a fair bit whilst you’re doing it, but I was assured that over time this would subside. Although there is evidence of bruising on my sides, I don’t think I have come off too badly so this will definitely be a class I do again!
